We have learnt subtraction of 3-digit numbers without and with regrouping. The same
method is applied when we subtract 4-digit numbers.

Subtraction without regrouping

Example 1. Subtract 5634 from 7947.

Solution. Write the numbers in columns and subtract them.

Step 1. Subtract the ones. 7 – 4 = 3 ones

Step 2. Subtract the tens. 4 – 3 = 1 ten
7 9 4 7
Step 3. Subtract the hundreds. 9 – 6 = 3 hundreds
– 5 6 3 4
Step 4. Subtract the thousands. 7 – 5 = 2 thousands

So, 7947 – 5634 = 2313.

Example 2. Subtract 6578 from 9999.

Solution. Write the numbers in columns and subtract them.
Step 1. Subtract the ones. 9 – 8 = 1 one Th H T O

Step 2. Subtract the tens. 9 – 7 = 2 tens 9 9 9 9

Step 3. Subtract the hundreds. 9 – 5 = 4 hundreds – 6 5 7 8

Step 4. Subtract the thousands. 9 – 6 = 3 thousands
So, 9999 – 6578 = 3421. 3 4 2 1
